Anaheim, CA – Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 7:02 p.m. as we drove westbound on the 91 freeway we stumbled upon a white Volvo CX70 Cross Country that was catching on fire just east of Imperial Highway and the Weigh Station.
As we slowed down to cut through traffic to make it to the right shoulder, a solo male wearing light color shorts and a black sweater was seen standing in front of the vehicle using his cellular phone possibly calling the 911 service in the area.
Once we stopped, we assessed the scene then walked to the man and checked inside the vehicle to make sure that there was no one else inside. The man said that he was the only occupant in the vehicle.
A passing California Highway Patrol Officer who was driving in the number one lane noticed the fire and also cut through lanes to assist. Minutes later two fire engines; one from the Orange County Fire Authority Yorba Linda station and one with the Anaheim Fire Department arrived at the scene.
Traffic was heavy but it was not affected by the car fire, drivers still flew by.
Firefighters blocked lanes number four and five with their fire engines to safely battle the flames until they were able to extinguish them. The driver was not injured due to the fire.
The Volvo was destroyed by the fire. The driver stated, “that he had moved to Las Vegas and resided out there for a year but that he had just recently moved back to California.” A bystander who had stopped to assist, responded with, “welcome back!”
