UNION COUNTY — A grieving mother is searching for answers after her son is left dead on the side of a road.
Pulaski County Sheriff's deputies said Elgin Brice, 33, was found dead on the side of a road in North Little Rock. They said he was the victim of a hit-and-run.
Sherry Jackson, Brice's mother, said she is trying to stay strong for the rest of his siblings and family after learning about what happened.
"My best friend," said Jackson. Pictures on a table are some of the only photos Jackson has left of Brice.
"Elgin was a wonderful person," said Jackson. "He makes you laugh."
That joyful spirit came to an end Friday, when Jackson said her phone rang early that morning.
"Worst phone call you can get," said Jackson. On the other end, a friend who told her about Brice's death.
"Worst phone in the world … you can get," said Jackson. "The type of person he was, so sweet. He was laying on the side of the street like an animal, who could do something like that?"
Investigators said the hit-and-run happened on Kelly Road, between Reed Road and Bee Jay Road. About a half mile from where Jackson said her son lived.
"Him laying on the side of the street like that, helpless," said Jackson. "I mean if you hit him, you could have at least called the police."
She's not left dealing with the 'what if's.'
"If you would have called the police, maybe he would have lived, unless you were trying to do this," said Jackson.
Brice was a son, the oldest of three, an uncle, cousin and a friend to many people.
"They love him," said Jackson. "He's going to be missed"
Her son's life, gone, a few days before Mother's Day. A tradition she'd grown to love is no more.
"He would get me strawberries, the chocolate covered strawberries. and boy did he think that was something," said Jackson.
Jackson said she'd make the two hour drive to Little Rock for those chocolate covered strawberries too.
Authorities ask anyone who knows anything about the hit-and-run to give them a call.
