Riverside, CA – April 11, 2018 at about 12:21 A.M. Officers patroling in a Police Helicopter by the name of "AirOne" notified the Riverside Field Office of the California Highway Patrol of a Traffic Hazard.
The traffic hazard was a vehicle that was parked on the eastbound HOV-Carpool lane of the 91 Freeway just West of Arlington Ave. Shortly before the responding ground unit arrived at that location, the vehicle was observed driving away eastbound with its lights blackedout.
The driver of the vehicle would then turn on the lights and turn them off again. A few minutes later, a CHP Patrol Unit caught up to the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop however the driver of the vehicle failed to yield to the red and blue lights and a pursuit ensued.
The pursuit continued from the eastbound 91 Freeway to the northbound I-215 freeway then transitioned to the northbound I-15 freeway and eventually ended in Oak Hills, CA on the northbound I-15 freeway just south of Main St after at least one of the vehicle's tires was flattened by spike strips.
During the pursuit, at some point while on the northbound I-215 freeway, CHP Officers with the San Bernardino Field Office took over the chase and the Riverside units dropped out of the pursuit. Though the driver continued to not comply with the commands from Officers, he was eventually taken into custody without further incident.
The driver drove intermittently at slow speeds and at high speeds from 30 mph to over 90 mph. Northbound traffic on the I-15 freeway was backedup for a few miles as CHP Officers concluded with the stop.
No further information was obtained at the scene.
